The fossil graveyard
The fossil cemetery
In the high plateau nearby the Cacciatore refuge, an important and fascinating fossil site was discovered a few years ago, where you can admire various species of reptiles and shells that have become fossilized over the centuries, such as the bivalve Megalodons, some of considerable size, which are confirmation of the existence of the tropical sea from which the Dolomites were formed.
Here Nature has left us an important science lesson, of great interest to children who will study these topics at school.
The site is to be found just a few minutes from the Cacciatore refuge and is well signed by stakes, thus permitting a circular course which then reaches the byre where the Yaks live.
It is just a short walk, not dangerous and not difficult even for the youngest of children, and takes approx. 45 minutes, without ever losing sight of the Cacciatore refuge.
